What is a Copyright?

A copyright protects authors of “original works of authorship.” The original work may be a book, lyrics of a song, the music composed for a song, a play, a painting, a photograph, a sculpture, a design, motion pictures, sound recordings architectural design or a computer programs.

The owner of a copyright has the exclusive right to reproduce the works, prepare derivatives based on the works, distribute or sell the work or copies of the work, display and perform the work publicly. It is illegal to for anyone to violate these rights or a copyright owner. To own a copyright the works need not be published or registered.

However, there are distinct advantages to having a copyright registered. A registration gives public notice of a copyright claim. A copyright registration is also required to file an infringement suite and it allows the owner to register with the US costumes and boarder patrol for protection against the importation of infringing copies.
