What is a Patent?

A patent is a property right granted by the Government of the United States of America to an inventor “to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention throughout the United States or importing the invention into the United States” for a limited time; in exchange for public disclosure of the invention when the patent is granted.  When an inventor (individual or company) invents a new product, article of manufacture, mechanical device, composition of matter, computer program, or a new and improved way of doing something or a new process  the inventor or the company may apply for a utility patent to the United States Patent and Trademark Office. To obtain a patent the invention also must be Novel and Non-obvious to an person of ordinary skill in the Art.
